St. Paul
Question from Anne on 5/8/2009:

I am writing a paper on St. Paul and cannot find when he was canonized and who was the reigning Pope.

Can you help me?

Thank you

Answer by Fr. John Echert on 5/8/2009:

I cannot claim to be an expert on canonical matters but I believe that the Apostles, de facto (with the obvious exception of Judas) are regarded as Saints by the very fact of their apostolic office. Add to that the fact that St. Paul died a martyr and no doubt it was universally accepted by the Church thereafter. A more formal process of canonization deveoped later in the Church but the first recognized saints were those who died a martyrs death.

Thanks, Anne

Father Echert
