blessing of bread and wine
Question from Marianne on 5/8/2009:

Dear Fr Echert

During the preparation of the gifts, the prayers of the blessings of the bread and wine are said separately (when the congregation says 'blessed be God forever'.

Most priests do it this way but I go to daily mass at this one church and he does blesses them together and we only say blessed be God forever once.

There must be a reason why they are blessed separately, do you know why? Thank you.

Answer by Fr. John Echert on 5/8/2009:

I know that some liberal priests do this, contrary to the form of the Mass determined by the Church. It is not acceptable; no priest has the authority to make such changes to the Mass. If nothing else, there is a spirit of innovation and disregard for Church authority that may be active in this priest...

Thanks, Marianne

Father Echert
