When was canon of scripture completed
Question from chris on 5/7/2009:

Dear Fr Echert Please can you tell me when the books of the New Testament where written. Personally I think they where completed prior to AD 70 when the Temple was destroyed bythe Romans as surely this epoch making event would have been expressly mentioned by a Gospel writer or letter writer? Also how soon to the events are the earlest extent text of the bible i understand they are quite close to the time of Jesus whereas the works of Plato are several centuaries after his time - yet historians have no problem with excepting the validity of his authorship or works. Kind regards chris

Answer by Fr. John Echert on 5/7/2009:

I am in complete agreement with you, especially for the reason you note and also because I believe that all the works of the New Testament are apostolic--either Apostles directly or indirectly (such as in the case of St. Mark and St. Luke). The only possible exception may be the Gospel of Saint John, though even there one could argue for pre-70 composition. Modernists and mainstream "scholars" almost universally project later dates but they have their own agenda and ignore much of biblical tradition.

Thanks, Chris

Father Echert
