Jesuit policy on gifts
Question from P.W. on 6/11/2012:

Can a new Jesuit deacon be allowed to keep gifts from his ordination, such as money? Or will the gifts be directed to the Superior General for whole Society?

Answer by Catholic Answers on 6/11/2012:

P.W.--

Jesuits, along with others who are members of religious orders and congregations, take a vow of poverty. Technically, anything given an individual member belongs to the order or congregation. Depending on the rules of that order or congregation, the member's direct superior can either ask the member to turn over gifts for the use of all members in the community or he can allow the member to keep some gifts for personal use. To find out what rules a Jesuit who is on the road to the priesthood will be expected to follow, ask that Jesuit before deciding on an appropriate gift.
