Just a comment regarding this post.

Usually in liturgical celebrations the rubrics are firmly established. This is especially true when it comes to the Mass. However, the rite of penance, in its introduction, says the confessor may always adapt the rite in any way he sees fit so long as the essential elements (confession, contrition, penance, and absolution) are retained.

In this case what we sadly have is the case of a young priest who is getting used to the tools of his ministry and is making a terrible mistake.
