Church Finance
Question from Joseph on 10/2/2009:

I am battling, what is a common thing for me w/ my professors. He is rehashing the old argument for the protestant reformation about the money of the church being based in simony and indulgence sales. As far as i know, indulgence sales while significant at periods, was merely a fraction of the church's annual revenue. Where did the church receive its annual finances. Was it land holdings, taxes, subsidies from the state, or did it have a protestant sense of tithing? Thank you for your assistance.
