Beginner History book
Question from Debra on 9/7/2009:

Hi, Can you suggest a good book for a beginner with church history. I'm a born Catholic but never learned as much as I should. My children ask me a lot of questions and sometimes I don't have the answers.

Thank you!

Answer by Matthew Bunson on 10/1/2009:

I would suggest the following titles: the superb series by Dr. Warren Carroll; Dr. Alan Schreck’s Compact History of the Catholic Church and Catholic and Christian: An Explanation of Commonly Misunderstood Catholic Beliefs; Triumph, by H.W. Crocker III; Church History by Fr. John Laux; and The Catholic Church Through the Ages by Fr. John Vidmar, O.P.

Less Catholic are the history of Christianity by Kenneth Scott Latourette and the Oxford History of the Christian Church. If you are looking for an encyclopedia on the subject, I would offer my own revised, updated edition of the Encyclopedia of Catholic History by Our Sunday Visitor; also there is the Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church.
