THE BLOOD OF JESUS
Question from Sharon on 10/19/2009:

I have a question that lays heavy on my heart and I hope I can get a answer to this: In Pa they are not giving the cup during this flu season and not shaking hands during peace, now I understand the shaking of hands and just knoding. but what I don't understand is that I had always believed that the cup the blood of Jesus, you could not get sick because Jesus is perfect and because he is perfect I just always felt I couldn't get sick receiving the cup. People would say to me I can't do that its not healty and other reasons, and I had always said Jesus is perfect so I can't get sick. Now they stopped it for a period of time, and I feel that it made me look like they were right and I was wrong, and not that I really care what they think, it does bother me I don't know if I am wrong or not, I mean I know Jesus is in the cup and he is perfect, Please help me understand this more clearly. Thank you for taking the time to read this and God Bless Sharon

Answer by Richard Geraghty on 11/1/2009:

Dear Sharon,

You are right in holding that Christ in the chalice is perfect. But his perfection does not mean that no one can get sick from many people drinking from the same chalice. That you follow the conventional wisdom on that is no sign that you lack faith. Go with the Church on this.

Dr. Geraghty
