absolution
Question from Debbie on 5/20/2009:

Thank you for your time. A priest I confessed to twice in the past year says: "for your penance say____and to the extent of your need I absolve you from your sins, in the Name..." (etc. as usual). This was when I confessed to missing Mass. Is the absolution valid? If not do I have to re-confess; and what of the Communions I've received since? I didn't see this in the "prev. asked ques". Thank you and God bless you, Deb

Answer by David Gregson on 10/16/2009:

It's a valid, but irregular form of absolution. I would either ask him to use the approved form or go to another confessor.
