Daughter's relationship with Mother after marriage
Question from Anonymous on 10/26/2012:

Daughter's relationship with Mother after marriage. Is there someplace in the bible that relates to this? I have a friend who just lost her own mother about 12 mos ago. This friend's daughter has been married about 4 years. The daughter and her husband no longer come around to see her Mother. According to the daughter...her place is now with her husband only. WHERE is this in the bible. These people are so called Christians...not Catholic Christians though.

Answer by David Gregson on 1/28/2014:

Your friend's daughter may be thinking of Matthew 19:5, "For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one." But this verse must be read in light of others, not least of which is the Fourth Commandment, "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which the LORD your God gives you." (Ex 20:12). Moreover, Jesus speaks accusingly of those who forsake their parents for some supposedly religious principle. See Mark 7:10-13.

Your friend's daughter illustrates the confusion that well-meaning Christians sometimes fall into when they try to interpret Scripture on their own, without regard to the 2000 year tradition of Scripture study to which the Catholic Church is heir.
