unintentionally blessed items
Question from really wondering on 6/25/2009:

This may sound silly, but I am sincere. I work with large numbers of rosaries, scapulars, etc that are used in an RE program. They all come in little bags, with tags, sticker, etc. When they are blessed everything gets sprinkled with holy water, it's all blessed in its' package. Other items, such as jewlery is blessed in its' package. Is it ok to throw the packaging, tags, stickers, etc out? I'm thinking it should be akin to when our food, room, houses etc are blessed they don't become sacramentals. Also, when you burn blessed objects, must you bury the ashes or can you just discard them? How would you best do this? Thank you!!

Answer by David Gregson on 11/2/2009:

Only those articles are blessed which are intended to be blessed. Obviously germs on a rosary aren't blessed with the blessing of the rosary. No more is the packaging of a rosary, image, picture, etc. So it's OK to throw it away.

The blessing of an object is lost when the form of the object is lost. So when a blessed object is reduced to ashes, the ashes no longer retain the blessing. You can discard them anywhere.
