Decomissioning a College Chapel
Question from Billie on 6/26/2009:

Can you give details of requirements to decomission a full time College Chapel. The college has sold the building and moved the chapel to another location. Is there a special formal liturgical rite necessary since this had been a year round chapel?

Answer by David Gregson on 11/2/2009:

Assuming this is a Catholic Chapel, here is the pertinent canon (1212).

"Sacred places lose their dedication or blessing if they have been in great measure destroyed, or if they have been permanently made over to secular usage, whether by decree of the competent Ordinary or simply in fact."

There is, to my knowledge, no rite of deconsecration of a sacred place.
