Re: Use of birth control to treat mental disorder Anonymous 06-23-2012
Question from Anonymous on 7/9/2012:

I read your post and wanted to share with you that I have the same condition. It took my husband and I a year to discern over the use of birth control to treat my OCD and PMDD. (I am in my forties and getting close to menopause). I have used the pill for a year now and it has helped with the PMDD, but I still use a anti-anxiety medication for the OCD. MY husband has been extremely supportive and agreed to abstinence once I started the pill. He sees it as a side effect of the illness and not a rejection of him. He wants so badly for me (and us) to have relief from the pain of OCD and PMDD. However, I want to suggest Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. It has been a great help and has helped me to gain so much control over my obsessions and compulsions. If you have not engaged in CBT or Exposure Response therapy you may want to bring this up with your doctors. It is a very active therapy and requires total commitment. The Holy Eucharist. Go to Holy Communion as often as you can! I don't even think I could make it one day with OCD without Jesus Christ! My prayers are with you.
