Chilean archbishop invites youth to encounter Christ

Archbishop Ricardo Ezzati of Santiago, president of the Chilean Bishops' Conference, called on young people to grow in their knowledge of Jesus Christ in order to deepen their relationship with him.

"We cannot be Christians if we don't know the Lord and his message of salvation," the archbishop told young people at a national gathering on Jan. 26.

In addition to knowing Jesus, he stressed, we must love him and come to see him as our friend and the "redeemer of our lives."

Archbishop Ezzati spoke during the closing Mass of the first National Congress of Catholic Young People, which was held at the Cathedral of Conception in central Chile.

Thanking the participants, he encouraged them to remain close to their Catholic faith, noting that "the Church is walking down the best path, which is the path of Jesus."

In hearing the testimonies of young people, the archbishop explained, "we pastors have felt profound emotion."

He observed that the priests could "sense with our spirit that the Lord is present in the Church of young people, in the Church that loves Jesus Christ and wants to make his message present."

Archbishop Ezzati told those gathered that "following Jesus closely makes us authentically Christians," according to the Archdiocese of Concepcion's communications department.

In addition, he said, "by following Jesus you discover the vocation that the Lord has given to each one of you."
