By Junno Arocho
MANASSAS, Virginia, SEPT. 24, 2012 (Zenit.org).- The Cardinal Newman Society, a non-profit organization that seeks to renew and strengthen Catholic identity in higher education, announced last Thursday the winners of their Catholic High School Honor Roll competition. The Honor Roll recognizes excellence in Catholic identity, academics and civic education in Catholic high schools across the United States.
The 50 schools who won the competition are distributed across 21 states. Pennsylvania had the most with 7 schools, following Texas with 6, and Michigan with 5. California, Florida, Minnesota, New York, Tennessee, and Virginia each had 3 schools, while Georgia and Indiana each had 2 schools. Colorado, Delaware, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Missouri, South Carolina, South Dakota, and Wisconsin each had 1 school in the Honor Roll.
Each of the 50 schools selected were recognized and several other schools received honors for special recognition in several categories. Seven schools were recognized for excellence in Catholic identity, six schools for academics, five schools for civic education, and five schools for two of the three categories.
"Since competition began in 2004, the Honor Roll has been a helpful tool for administrators, families, and benefactors in recognizing the quality of a Catholic high school," said Patrick J. Reilly, president of the Cardinal Newman Society. "The Honor Roll schools are a reminder that Catholic education is getting better every day -- not only academically, but in the renewal of Catholic identity -- and we are delighted to see the increased level of competition among the schools that participated in the program this year."
The Cardinal Newman Society says the program is "consistent with its mission of helping Catholic families and promoting faithful Catholic education."
