Communion to the homebound
Question from Melvin on 09-02-2014:
If the Blessed Sacrament is taken to an elderly person at home and that person is unable to receive Communion, what should the EMHC do? Consume it himself before leaving or return it to the tabernacle?
Answer by Catholic Answers on 09-05-2014:
Melvin--

The EMHC returns the host to the church where he obtained it, and either gives it to a priest or deacon, or (if deputed to do so) returns it to the tabernacle. He does not consume it himself unless he is completely impeded from returning the host to the church (e.g., the church is locked and no priest or deacon is available).

I should note though that any EMHC who does not know what to do in circumstances such as this should not be entrusted with the consecrated host. He lacks the training he needs to properly handle and secure the Eucharist.
