EWTN Catholic Q&A
Communion after divorce
Question from S.V. on 09-09-2013:

My boyfriend was denied Communion after his divorce. Is this a standard practice?

Answer by Catholic Answers on 09-09-2013:

It depends on the individual's circumstances. If a divorced person has an annulment from the Church, or if he is observing marital chastity pending an annulment, then he is presumed free to receive Communion.

In this case, your boyfriend is obviously engaged in a romantic relationship with you. If he does not have an annulment from the Church, then that relationship with you violates marital chastity. In such a situation, he should not present himself for Communion until he has regularized his canonical status in the Church.
