EWTN Catholic Q&A
Peter Lombard's Sentences
Question from wayne on 12-28-2012:

Dr. Geraghty, With the overwhelming references to St. Augustine in Lombard's Book of Sentences, could we say it is more or less an Augustinian theology? I ask this because it is really difficult to encaptulate all of Augustine's doctrines in one work compared say to St. Thomas Aquinas and his Summa. Trying to tie down and order Augustine's teachings over the breadth of his writings is difficult and interpreting what he is saying even more so.

thank you.

Answer by Richard Geraghty on 02-17-2013:

Dear Wayne,

Before Aquinas St. Augustine was THE theologian. That's why Aquinas pays so much attention to him. The Church today still considers these two THE GIANTS ABOVE ALL.
