EWTN Catholic Q&A
Coming persecutions.
Question from Hannah on 11-27-2012:

Here's something to think about. We know that only 8 people were saved on the Ark and that Lot and his family escaped Sodom and Gomorrah before it was destroyed by fire. So, that being said, will the just escape like them during the coming persecutions, sufferings, and disasters like they were? Not to say we won't suffer to, but just thinking? God would have to spare some people if an unimaginable disaster happened that would wipe out a large part of humanity, wouldn't He? (Hint: Our Lady of Akita, Fatima, etc.) Anyway, just a thought and thank you, Father. What do you think?

Answer by Fr. John Echert on 12-12-2012:

God does tend to save a remnant, when he plans to rebuild. This was the case, for instance, with the Babylonian Exile following that calamity. Not all the just will be saved, otherwise there would be few martyrs, but quite possibly a remnant, not based necessarily upon degree of merit but by the determination of providence.

Thanks, Hannah
