EWTN Catholic Q&A
Two priests with pope
Question from Mary on 04-24-2005:

There were two priests who were standing on either side of the pope as he was greeting the crowd on the balcony immediately after the election. They have also been on either side of him during mass and in procession. Do they have official positions and what I am even more curious about is whether or not they are brothers! They really resemble each other!

Answer by Colin B. Donovan, STL on 04-24-2005:

At all pontifical liturgies their are Masters of Ceremonies of the Papal Chapel. The white=haired one was Archbishop Marini, whom everyone is familiar with after years of standing next to Pope John Paul. He heads the Office of Papal Liturgical Ceremonies. The other was no doubt a priest from that office, acting as an assistant MC.
