EWTN Catholic Q&A
fisherman's ring
Question from bernard on 04-21-2005:

When the fisherman's ring of the deceased pontif is destroyed - what happens to the pieces? And when does the new pontif receive his ring? Who makes them? Are there several different sizes on hand to fit whomever is elected? Thanks for your help!

Answer by Matthew Bunson on 04-21-2005:

By custom, the ring is destroyed by the Cardinal Camerlengo in front of the Cardinals and then buried with the deceased pontiff in the first of the three coffins. As I understand such things, the ring is fitted to the finger of the pope, but it is not worn on a daily basis as it is used for official documents as a seal, etc.
