EWTN Catholic Q&A
St. Malachi Prophecy
Question from Bob on 04-16-2005:

Wasn't there a Saint--St. Malachi, maybe (?) who prophesized something about each Pope--and didn't he prophesize that Pope John Paul II would be the last Pope for some reason?

Thanks! Bob

Answer by Colin B. Donovan, STL on 04-16-2005:

St. Malachy was an Irish bishop and monk, and friend of St. Bernard. The Church accepts St. Malachy, but has never said that the prophecies attributed to him are his. They appeared in the 16th century, centuries after his death, and are more accurate for the Popes before their appearance than for the Popes after their appearance. Just a little bit suspicious. According to them the next Pope is "Glory of the Olive," and he is second to last. They make for interesting speculation, but it would be unreasonable to put much credence in them.
