Question from Marsha Parrino on 04-12-2005:

1. What order of priests did Pope John Paul II belong to?

2. Can a priest be elected Pope or must it be a cardinal?

3. What will happen to the Polish nuns who were reponsible for cooking, etc. for Pope John Paul II? Will they stay at the Vatican or return to Poland?

Answer by Matthew Bunson on 04-14-2005:

John Paul II did not belong to a specific religious order. Any single Christian male is eligible for election to the papacy, technically, although it is more than likely that the next pope will be one of the Cardinal Electors taking part in the conclave. I am uncertain as to what the disposition will be of the Polish nuns. The reorganization of the Papal Household will be up to the next pope.
