EWTN Catholic Q&A
Communion in the hand
Question from TInsley Ducote on 04-10-2005:

How did John Paul feel about communion in the hand? In all his pictures I never see him give communion in the hand. I'm a convert I want to know the right way. John Paul II I'll miss you. Love Tinsley

Answer by Colin B. Donovan, STL on 04-12-2005:

The Holy Father only allowed Communion in the hand in Vatican City in the 90s, and he preferred not to give it that way himself. However, it is a lawful way (with an Indult) and if done in a dignified manner with respect to the Particles that may result (and need to be consumed) then the Church permits it. Communion on the tongue is the norm, however, while communion in the hand is allowed by Indult in those countries which received permission to allow it, as the US, Italy and many others have received.
