EWTN Catholic Q&A
Papal Assasination Attempt of 81
Question from Ludivina Garcia on 04-08-2005:

I seem to recall that then communist Bulgaria was thought to be the force behind JPII's assassination attempt. I am I wrong? During the past week I heard mention on TV it may of been the KGB.

Answer by Colin B. Donovan, STL on 04-12-2005:

Documents discovered only quite recently in (East) Germany show that the KGB, though its Bulgaria communist counterpart, was behind the assassination attempt. This only verified what everyone had assumed since that day. The documents have been turned over to the Italian government, which has never officially closed the case.
