EWTN Catholic Q&A
Eastern Church Bishop to be next Pope?
Question from Paula Jane on 04-03-2005:

Can it be possible for a Eastern Church Bishop to be elected as the next Pope? God bless.

Answer by Matthew Bunson on 04-08-2005:

Yes. In fact, I can think of two Eastern Catholic Cardinals in the conclave: Cardinal Varkey Vithayathil, C.SS.R. of the major archbishopric of Ernakulam-Angomaly of the Syro-Malabar Church (India) and Cardinal Ignace Moussa I Daoud, former patriarch of Antioch for Syrians and currently prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches.
