EWTN Catholic Q&A
papal election...the super majority
Question from peter wilson on 04-02-2005:

Is it two-thirds plus ONE or simply a two-thirds majority that elects??

Answer by Matthew Bunson on 04-08-2005:

The answer is yes and no. As I understand it, the papal decree on the election stipulates a 2/3 majority if the total number of cardinals can be divided readily into thirds. In the event that it cannot, then 2/3 plus one will be in effect. We will have to wait until they actually go in to know for certain as that will be when the final count is revealed (e.g., Cardinal Sin proving to be too ill).
