EWTN Catholic Q&A
Age of new Pope
Question from Theresa Carow on 04-02-2005:

I understand that the new Pope must be less than 80 years; however, what is the youngest that a new Pope can be?

Answer by Matthew Bunson on 04-08-2005:

No, there is technically no age limit for a new pope. A pope may be any age, as long as he is of sound mind and sufficient health to assume the burden of the papacy. You are perhaps thinking of the age limit of 80 that is imposed upon Cardinals -- after reaching the age of 80 they are ineligible to vote in a conclave.
