EWTN Catholic Q&A
Question from mary kallenborn on 04-02-2005:

Did pope paul have a opinion on who would be a good canidate for pope & would it be consider?

Answer by David Gregson on 04-12-2005:

The Holy Father had certain ones among the Cardinals whose thinking was more in line with his, but, to my knowledge, he never proposed a successor to himself. Nor if he did, would the Cardinals be bound to honor it, since the Pope has supreme authority in the Church on earth only as long as he is on earth.
