EWTN Catholic Q&A
Office of the Dead
Question from John on 04-02-2005:

For those who are obliged to say the Divine Office, should the Office for the Dead be said in addition to regular office? Should one say the Office of the Dead for the entire mourning period? Would it be permissible to use the prayer in the sacramentary for a dead pope in the Divine Office?

Thank you and may God recieve John Paul.

Answer by Colin B. Donovan, STL on 04-02-2005:

The Octave of Easter, the Sundays of Easter, and the Solemnity of the Annunciation, have precedence, so, the Office of the Dead could not be said until Tuesday. The Office of the seasonal day (e.g. Saturday of Easter Week) could certainly be offered for the Pope and his name included in the intercessory prayers.
