Lighting candles at funeral Mass
Question from Dennis on 12/10/2013:

A security guard asked me this morning why we Catholics light candles at a funeral Mass. He was watching the Mandela funeral. I did not have an answer. I told him we light candles for our loved ones who have passed but I did not have the specific answer to his question.

Answer by Catholic Answers on 12/13/2013:

Dennis--

Nelson Mandela was a Methodist, so Catholic reasons for use of candles at a funeral Mass have nothing to do with why it was done at Mandela's funeral. Your friend will have to research what the gesture means within the cultural and/or religious context to which Mandela belonged.
