Do you know if the American state of Maryland was named after the Blessed Mother? |
||||||||
Answer by Catholic Answers on 10/15/2012: | ||||||||
Anonymous-- Officially, no. On paper anyway, the name was explained as honoring Queen Henrietta Maria, wife of King Charles I of England. In a time of raging anti-Catholic sentiment in a country with historic hostility toward all things Catholic, the Catholic colonists of Maryland probably figured that explanation good cover (and likely were not adverse to honoring the British Catholic queen). But it is also very possible that the name Maryland was also intended to honor the Mother of God. Catholics in the British Isles after the English Reformation had a long history of maintaining their Catholic identity and allegiance by subterfuge. Michelle Arnold |
