Thoughts on the Pokemon phenomenon
Question from Helene D. Zaepfel on 11/7/2001:

I read with interest Michael O'Brien's piece on the Harry Potter series. I also heard him on EWTN and I have his book "....Dragons". I cannot find anything in Catholic information about Pokemon. To me, it is as serious as Harry Potter yet not much has been said or written about it. It is of Japanese origin, promoting their societal views, and it seems to be all about conquering and conquests and killing off certain types of people who get in the way of one's ambitions or climb to superiority. It strikes me as strange stuff for children, especially Catholic children. If we are concerned about the effect of Harry Potter, why not Pokemon? A small fortune is spent on it and you advance to new levels, always fighting for position and power. There has to be something wrong with this and I've seen a change in my granddaughter since she has been into Pokemon.....Please let me know if there is anything that has been written about it in among Catholic authors or experts. I know that once there was an article in a Catholic publication where a Catholic Bishop from Mexico or New Mexico said it was a very dangerous game and parents should not allow it in their homes....but it was not enough for me to convince my daughter that she should stop buying this stuff. Please advise where I might look for information. Thank you. Mrs. Helene Zaepfel

Answer by Dr. William Carroll on 11/10/2001:

I know nothing about Pokemon, but you state some good reasons for concern about it. Perhaps some of our readers can refer you to Catholic sources about it. - Dr. Carroll
