ST. JOHN’S PASSION BY JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH (120:00)

Johann Sebastian Bach’s great musical setting of the account of Christ’s capture and crucifixion according to St. John is performed by the Choir of King’s College and the Brandenburg Consort. Soloists are John Mark Ainsley, Stephen Richardson, Catherine Bott, Michael Chance, Paul Agnew, and Stephen Varcoe. Stephen Cleobury conducts this performance from Cambridge, England.

This program tells the story of Blessed Vasyl Velychkovsky, who was a Ukrainian priest who spent several years of his life as a prisoner in Soviet gulags for refusing to deny his Catholic faith. After being released from prison in 1972, and banned from his home country, he found refuge in Winnipeg, Canada. He died shortly thereafter as a result of torture and medical testing in the hands of the Soviets.
