In the Catholic world of the twentieth century, no saint has probably had a greater claim to prayers answered through their intercession than St. Therese of Lisieux (1873-1897). She is the one Pope Pius X described as “the greatest saint of modern times.” Since 1900 millions of pilgrims have journeyed to Lisieux to visit the home and convent of this great saint. St. Therese’s writings have captured the hearts of millions. The Story of a Soul, her spiritual autobiography, made her a household Catholic name after her death. Throughout her life as a Carmelite nun, she lived the faith of Christ in a most ordinary-yet extraordinary-way. Her spiritual childhood and simplicity became known as the “Little Way.” On July 17, 1897, as Therese was dying, she said, “I feel that my mission is just beginning, my work of making people love God as I love him.” Today she continues to fulfill her mission from Heaven as millions of people are drawn to her way of life every year.
