FOR THE INTELLECTUALS

Daniel translating in his broken English what the choirmaster of Solesmes explained to the pilgrims about Chant.

Gregorian chant presented different melodies in different places of France. Those melodies had never been written they were not written they were only sang and they were repeated and learn by the students and then they were taught to the next generations.

But then in the eighth or ninth century the French choirmasters felt what they got from Rome was a little bit out of tone so they enriched it with more color more variety more melody that they got from the diverse different place of France.

Don't sing along with the monks because each choir figuration has its own discipline with that choirmaster. So if you saying and your voice is introduced in the choir it disturbs the harmony that has been implanted in this body of singers and they lose their balance.

Even now a day is when a monk from Solesmes goes singing with the choir of monks from another monastery he is very careful of not having his voice being too strong because his voice may alterrate the harmony of brothers they've come to know and sing with.

But fortunately we here or in any other monastery we sing along together six times a day the whole year around and for several years we're used to each other we have learned to sing as the whole group together.

The reading of this music is not the most difficult one it is quite easy reading.

The most difficult part of singing Gregorian chant is when one syllable or one word has more than one note given to it. But which you need to hear is the master of reading.

Usually the way one sing is to attribute one or two notes in one syllable. But again Gregorian chant one syllable may have five, six notes given to it.

When you see two notes next to each other to time spent on it is reduced by the number of notes. If you see that note last one second if you see twice that same notes it's going to be said two times within one second.

In ancient time the whole choir was singing the first line and the rest sung by only one or two singers.

As a matter of fact this kind of singing was reserved only to elite singers only one or two in the community would sing it.

And naturally when you have more people to sing you naturally end up singing more slowly. If there was just two singers they could sing with this rhythm.
