Episodes Include:
DAILY TRUTH
Chesterton was prolific in every genre, from short detective stories to
novels to essays. Perhaps his greatest volume of work was his newspaper
articles. This episode focuses on this portion of his work, and includes
a dramatic re-creation of an English couple enjoying his witty column.
WORDS ABOUT WORDS
Among his many talents, Chesterton was a great literary Critic. Chuck
Chalberg appears as Chesterton with some of his most pithy comments
about the art of writing.
A SHORT HISTORY OF HISTORY
Chesterton's insights into history are not unique-at least not to the
common man. He points out that there are two kinds of historians: those
who tell half of the truth, and those who tell none of the truth.
A TOOL OR A TOY
Science can be used either as a tool or as a toy, according the G. K.
Chesterton. At its highest and noblest, it is a toy. Some have
mistakenly tried to elevate science to the status of a religion.
THE LIBERTY OF GOD
Science can be used either as a tool or as a toy, according the G. K.
Chesterton. At its highest and noblest, it is a toy. Some have
mistakenly tried to elevate science to the status of a religion.
A SACRAMENTAL UNDERSTANDING Chesterton's Insights into the
incarnational religion established by Christ are the focus of this
episode. Included are dramatizations of the verbal dual between Turnball
and MacIan from "the Ball and the Cross", and the climactic seen from
one of the Fr. Brown Mystery stories (of course, the solution to the
mystery is not revealed).
CHESTERTON & THE SAINTS
"We are always ready to make a saint or prophet of the educated man who
goes into cottages to give a little kindly advice to the uneducated. The
mediaeval saint or prophet was an uneducated man who walked into grand
houses to give a little kindly advice to the educated."
CHESTERTON & THE MOTHER OF GOD
Chesterton's devotion to the Blessed Mother was expressed in many ways. He
donated a statue of Mary to his parish church. He also wrote poems about
Mary, which are read in Chesterton's voice by Chuck Chalberg.
TEN THOUSAND REASONS
In this episode, we hear a dozen or so of the 10,000 reasons that
Chesterton became Catholic. For example: "The Catholic Church is the
only thing that frees a man from the degrading slavery of being a child
of his age."
CHESTERTON'S FRIENDS
Among Chesterton's friends were 2 other well known Catholics: Maurice
Baring, Hilaire Belloc. Correspondences and works of these 2 men are
dramatized in this episode.
CHESTERTON'S ENEMIES
Chesterton's intellectual arch-nemesis was also one of his closest
friends. A debate between Chesterton and George Bernard Shaw is
dramatized with profound, and often hilarious effects.
MOMENTS FILLED WITH ETERNITY
Chesterton's wife is almost never mentioned in his writings. This was
not for any lack of affection on his part, but at her own request. If it
were up to him, he probably would not have written of anyone else. His
wife also wrote poetry, and some of her poetry is featured on this
episode.
THE BATTLE GOES ON
Chesterton's battle with modernism is dramatized in this episode, taking
scenes from "The Man Who Was Thursday" and "The Surprise". The subjects
dealt with are relevant, even today.
