| One of the unreported stories of the 2010 midterm elections was the huge number of pro-life candidates that were swept into office. This issue of life was thrust into the national spotlight during the debate over health care reform and it obviously had an enormous impact on yesterday's elections. According to the National Right to Life at least 78 pro-life House candidates were voted into office. These include tested pro-life Congressmen like Chris Smith (R) and Dan Lipinski (D) to new arrivals like Sean Duffy (R) and Ben Quayle (R). At least nine new pro-life Senators emerged from some of the most hotly contested matches in the country. Victors include Marco Rubio (R-Fla), Pat Toomey (R-PA), Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) and Rand Paul (I-KY). More telling than the reversal of political fortune suffered by the Democratic party is the number of pro-choice candidates that went down to defeat-- some by razor thin margins all over the nation. Perhaps this is another piece of evidence to support the polls showing that America is a decidedly pro-life country. But only time, and a few congressional votes will truly tell the tale. |
