Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops
for Europe
| Although the Holy Father had called a Synod for Europe earlier
in the decade (28 Nov. to 14 Dec. 1991), Pope John Paul II
convened a second special Synod for Europe to discuss the new
evangelization, as he had done for the other continents. That
special Synod commenced on 1 October 1999, the feast of St.
Therese of Lisieux, and concluded on 23 October 1999. It brought
together cardinals, bishops, priests, religious and laity from
throughout Europe, as well as, representatives of the Roman
Curia. Following are the most significant documents of the
Synod. The final document of the Synod, the Apostolic
Exhortation Ecclesia in Europa (The Church in Europe),
has not yet been issued by the Holy Father. |
