Canon Law - ZEXCOMM.HTM - Excommunication - Contempt for Eucharist ZENIT An official interpretation of Canon 1367 of the Latin Rite Code of Canon Law was issued July 8th, 1999, by the President of the Pontifical Council for the Interpretation of Legislative Texts. This canon concerns the automatic excommunication latae sententiae of Latin Rite Catholics who contemptuous treat or throw away the Holy Eucharist.
