Address to Bartholomew I - Pope John Paul II
On 29 June, in the Vatican's
Clementine Hall, the Holy Father welcomed the Ecumenical Patriarch
Bartholomew I on the Solemnity of Sts Peter and Paul. The Patriarch's
visit commemorated the historic encounter in 1964 between Pope Paul VI and
Patriarch Athenagoras I.

On 29 June, in the Vatican's Clementine Hall, His Holiness Bartholomew I
expressed to the Holy Father his desire for a unity based on "total
incorporation of our existence in Christ, in whom and through whom we live
our union as a spiritual event."

Patron Saints of Rome, Peter and Paul, the Holy Father delivered his
Angelus Address to the faithful in St Peter's Square, recalling the

On 29 June, at an audience with the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I,
the Holy Father also spoke to Bishop Makarios of Lampsaque who had
accompanied to Rome the Rector and students of the Chambésy
Institute for Advanced Studies in Orthodox Theology, part of the Orthodox
Centre of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

On 29 June, the Solemnity of Sts Peter and Paul, the Holy Father presided
at the Eucharistic Concelebration held in St Peter's Square, with the
participation of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople.
During the Holy Mass, the Holy Father conferred the Pallium on 44
Metropolitan Archbishops.

On July 1, Pope John Paul II
and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople signed a Common
Declaration during the course of their meeting in the Holy Father's
Private Library, pledging their continued efforts toward reunion of
Orthodox and Catholic Churches.

On 1 July, in his Private Library, the Holy Father received Bartholomew I,
the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, who had come to take his leave
of the Pope before returning to the Phanar in his Patriarchal See.

On 4 July, before leading the
recitation of the Angelus in St Peter's, Square, the Holy Father commented
on the recent visit to the Vatican of the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew
I of Constantinople to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the historic
encounter between Paul VI and Athenagoras I.
