ARGENTINE BISHOPS DECRY INJUSTICE IN JUBILEE DOCUMENT
| BUENOS AIRES (CWNews.com) - In its Jubilee document entitled "Jesus Christ, Lord of
History," the Argentine Bishops' Conference issued one of its strongest appeals against social
injustice in their country and called on Catholics to examine their conscience for responsibility in
"Among the wounds to the nation's dignity, back in 1990, we, the Argentine bishops denounced one
that still remains among us: the lack of justice, so long awaited," the bishops said. "There is a real
injustice, the source of poverty, which is extended down to inhuman dimensions in misery, in the
tragic marginalization of the weakest."
The bishops acknowledged "the loss of the sense of justice and the lack of respect for neighbor
have become critical and have turned into social situations of inequity." Therefore, the bishops call
"all Christian Argentines to look into their own heart, to review their concrete personal actions and
activities, and to ask if they are not personally participating, somehow, in this circle of immorality
that brings poverty and violence."
The bishops also recognized that "we can fail and commit sin, so we are ready to ask for
forgiveness and reconcile," but "we want to contribute in creating in Argentina a culture of faith,
hope, charity, and freedom, according to what Jesus wants."
