JUBILEE OF PERMANENT DEACONS BEGINS IN ROME
Vatican City, 19 (NE) Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos, Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy, officially opened yesterday afternoon the Jubilee of Permanent Deacons. In St. Mary Major Basilica, the Cardinal Prefect welcomed deacons from several parts of the world, present in Rome for the Jubilee celebration. After the opening address and the recitation of the rosary, there was a moment of Eucharist adoration and benediction.

As the Cardinal stated, more than 900 deacons are attending the celebration, many of them
together with their wifes and children. "Attendance has been greater than expected, that is an
example of the greater presence of deacons in today's Church", the Cardinal affirmed, in
declarations previous to the Jubilee event.

Today, Mass will be celebrated in the morning, to be followed by a talk on St. Lawrence, Deacon,
and an audience with the Holy Father at noon. In the afternoon the program continues with a
meeting at 4 p.m. of permanent deacons and a speech to them by Archbishop Roberto Gonzalez of
San Juan de Puerto Rico on "The permanent deacon: his identity, role and prospective."

At this same hour the families of permanent deacons who are married will meet in Holy Spirit
Church near the Vatican where Cardinal James Francis Stafford, president of the Pontifical
Council for the Laity, will speak on "The Ideal Family of the Married Permanent Deacon." The
Jubilee will end on Sunday, with the ordination of new deacons.
