40,000 ATTEND POPE'S WEEKLY AUDIENCE
|
VATICAN, Sept. 6 (CWNews.com) -- Approximately 40,000 people were on hand in St. Peter's
Square for the regular weekly public audience with Pope John Paul II on Wednesday, September
6.
"In order to walk alongside Christ, we must undertake a profound change in our mentality and our
lives," the Holy Father said. "The path that Jesus shows us is a straight one; it requires sacrifice and
a total gift of one's self."
The Pope made his remarks after touring through the Square in his white jeep, greeting the pilgrims
who had come to Rome-- in most cases, for their Jubilee pilgrimage. He then delivered his talk in
several different languages.
Among the groups of pilgrims at the papal audience were 140 different groups from Italian dioceses.
The Holy See also noted the presence of pilgrims from Russia, Poland, Romania, Hungary, the
Czech Republican, Slovakia, Croatia, France, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Canada, Vietnam, Great
Britain, Ireland, Malta, Japan, the Philippines, the United States, Germany, Austria, Spain, Mexico,
Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Paraguay, Argentina, Chile, Portugal, and Brazil.
