 On Sunday, November 16, 1997, Pope John Paul II formally
opened the special synod of the Americas. This Synod, which concluded on December 12th,
1997, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, brought together 41 cardinals, 98 bishops, and
76 priests from North and South America, and the Roman Curia. Following are the most
significant documents of the Synod. The final document of the Synod, the Apostolic
Exhortation Ecclesia in America (The Church in America), was issued
Saturday, 23 January, 1999, by the Holy Father at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in
Mexico City.
