Cardinal Jean Zerbo was born 27 December 1943, in Ségou, Mali, where he was ordained priest on 10 July 1971. Beginning his formation in Lyons, France, he continued studies in Rome at the Pontifical Biblical Institute (1977-1981), where he obtained a license in Sacred Scripture. He began ministry as parish priest in 1982 in Markala, and as professor at the Major Seminary of Bamako. He was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Bamako and titular Bishop of Accia on 21 June 1988. He was transferred to the Diocese of Mopti on 19 December 1994, and on 27 June 1998 he was appointed Archbishop of Bamako, where he was involved in the promotion of reconciliation and solidarity among the Malian people.
