Cardinal Albert Malcolm Ranjith Patabendige Don was born, 15 November 1947, in Polgahawela, Sri Lanka. He was ordained to the priesthood on 29 June 1975, and completed his theological studies at Rome’s Pontifical Urbanian University and did postgraduate studies at the Pontifical Biblical Institute. On 17 June 1991, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Colombo, Sri Lanka and Titular Bishop of Cabarsussi. He was ordained Bishop on 31 August 1991. On 2 November 1995, he was appointed Bishop of Ratnapura, Sri Lanka, from which post he resigned on 1 October 2001, on being appointed head of the pontifical missionary societies under the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. On 29 April 2004, he was made Titular Archbishop of Umbriatico and appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Indonesia and East Timor. He was appointed Secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments on 10 December 2005. During his time as Secretary, he was known for his strong defense of tradition in the Catholic Mass. On 16 June 2009, he was appointed Archbishop of Colombo, being installed on 5 August 2009. On 20 November 2010, he was elevated to Cardinal.
