Cardinal Donald William Wuerl was born in Pittsburgh, 12 November 1940. He was ordained to the priesthood, 17 December 1966, after studying at Rome’s North American College. He holds degrees from the Catholic University of America, the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, and a doctorate in theology from Rome’s Pontifical University of St Thomas. On 30 November 1985, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Seattle and Titular Bishop of Rossmarkaeum. He was ordained Bishop on 6 January 1986. He resigned the position 26 May 1987 and was appointed Bishop of Pittsburgh, 11 February 1988, being installed the next day. On 16 May 2006, he was appointed Archbishop of Washington and installed 22 June 2006. In the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, he has served as chairman of the Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis, chairman of the Committee on Doctrine, and chairman of the board of the National Catholic Educational Association. He was elevated to Cardinal on 20 November 2010.
