Cardinal Justin Francis Rigali was born on April 19, 1935, in the U.S.A. After his ordination to the priesthood, he spent 30 years working in Rome, closely with Paul VI, John Paul I, and Pope John Paul II. He was apostolic nuncio in Madagascar, papal chamberlain, and director of the English-language section of the secretariat of state. He became president of the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in 1985, and became titular archbishop of Bolsena. In 1994, Pope John Paul II assigned Archbishop Rigali to head the diocese of St. Louis, Missouri; and, more recently, assigned him to the larger diocese of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was created a cardinal priest on October 21, 2003. His titular church is St. Prisca.
