Cardinal Julian Herranz was born on March 31, 1930, in Spain. At 19 years of age, he joined Opus Dei. He obtained doctorates in medicine and canon law, and was ordained to the priesthood on August 7, 1955. After his ordination, he taught canon law at the University of Navarre. He assisted during the Second Vatican Council, and, with Opus Dei, traveled to several countries for pastoral work. In 1991, John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Vertera. Then, in 1994, he became the president of the Pontifical Commission for the Interpretation of Legislative Texts. In 1999, he was appointed president of the Disciplinary Commission of the Roman Curia. He was created a cardinal on October 21, 2003, and became titular deacon of St. Eugene. On 15 February 2007, he retired as President of Legislative Texts. |
